Who doesn’t want healthier, stronger and shinier hair? It is obtainable! I promise. Today I want to talk to you about how to wash your hair only once a week. You heard that right. And before you shut this post down… hear me out. Even if you’re someone who washes your hair every day. If you give it time, I guarantee my method works. How can I say that? Because this is how I maintain my hair each week. Remember the post I did on how I get my nail polish to last? Just like that post, trust me. I’ve got you covered.
Let me first start by saying this, it’s a process. You will need your patients cap on for this…and to hide the oily hair days, ha. My method doesn’t happen overnight. Give it a month or so and you’ll be on your way to washing your hair weekly. If once a week is too extreme, then you can follow the routine and at least get yourself to twice a week. Depending on what I have going on I’ll wash my hair mid week but at this point, there isn’t any need for it. I’ve trained my hair to last the whole week.
Train? Yes.
Washing your hair every day can strip it of its natural oils and lead to dryness, damage, and frizz. Washing your hair only once a week is a great way to improve your hair health and save time and money.
Here are some tips on how to wash your hair only once a week:
Choose the right shampoo and conditioner. Look for lightweight products that are free of sulfates and silicones. Sulfates can strip your hair of its natural oils, and silicones can build up over time and make your hair look greasy. I recently switched to HairStory and only wish I would have known about it sooner. It doesn't foam but you can feel it clean as your washing. It breaks up all the tangles and HairStory I a simple one-step process. It's incredible.

Wash your hair properly. Avoid scrubbing your scalp too hard, as this can irritate your scalp and produce more oil. Instead, gently massage the shampoo into your scalp with your fingertips. Rinse your hair thoroughly to remove all of the shampoo.
Use dry shampoo on your off days. Dry shampoo is a great way to freshen up your hair without washing it. It absorbs excess oil and dirt, and it can also add volume to your hair. Try Skyline from R+Co. It's been my personal go to for 8 years.

Protect your hair from heat damage. If you use heat styling tools on your hair, be sure to apply a heat protectant spray first. This will help to minimize damage and keep your hair looking healthy.

Here are some additional tips for washing your hair only once a week:
- Use a clarifying shampoo once a week or so. This will help to remove any product buildup from your hair.
- Condition your hair regularly. Conditioner helps to hydrate and protect your hair. Be sure to apply conditioner to the ends of your hair, where it's needed most.
- Avoid touching your hair throughout the day. This can transfer oil from your fingers to your hair.
- Wear a silk or satin pillowcase at night. This will help to reduce friction and breakage.
If you're new to washing your hair only once a week, it may take some time to adjust. But with a little patience and effort, you'll be able to achieve healthier, stronger, and shinier hair.
2023 updates:
- There are now many more sulfate-free and silicone-free shampoos and conditioners available, so it's easier to find the right products for your hair type.
- Dry shampoo has also come a long way in recent years. There are now many different types of dry shampoo available, including some that are specifically designed for people with oily hair, curly hair, or dark hair.
- There are also a number of new heat protectant sprays on the market that offer additional benefits, such as UV protection or frizz control.
If you're struggling to adjust to washing your hair only once a week, here are a few tips:
- Start by gradually reducing the number of times you wash your hair each week. For example, if you currently wash your hair every day, start by washing it every other day. Then, after a week or two, try washing it every two days. Continue to gradually reduce the number of times you wash your hair until you're able to wash it only once a week.
- Use dry shampoo on your off days to help absorb excess oil and dirt.
- Style your hair in a way that helps to hide any oiliness. For example, you could tie your hair back in a ponytail or bun.
- If you have to wash your hair more often than once a week, try using a mild shampoo and conditioner. You may also want to avoid using heat styling tools on your hair.
With a little patience and effort, you'll be able to achieve your goal of washing your hair only once a week.
